45 Days to Go - Paper Cones for Dried Flowers

Making Paper Cones

After our ceremony, we are going to have a daytime departure with our guests throwing dried flowers at us. Inspired by a few different ideas and wanting to incorporate more newspaper into our celebrations, I set to work tonight.

This was a messy project for someone like me who does not like mess...

A little back story first:
My fiance loves to read the newspaper. He looks forward to buying the Sunday edition of the New York Times, and spending the afternoon reading it cover to cover. I love that about him.

He has a stack of them in his closet that I decided to incorporate into our wedding. It may not seem special to some people, but there is something about seeing a newspaper that comforts me. It reminds me of his passion for reading, and his excitement at spending an afternoon with the paper.

Here is what I am working with:

I started with an inner piece, pulled it out, and cut it down the left side fold.

Then, I folded it in half.
I folded it again in half, corner to corner.

Each time I did this was a learning process about how long each cone would take.

I started getting to where I would only need two pieces of tape. Waste not, want not.

I would roll one corner up to the top of the triangle, and tape inside the cone.

Then I would crease the paper over to the other corner to smooth out the excess newspaper, and roll it up to evenly meet the other corner.

Two pieces of tape gone, and the newspaper cone created...
now for the decoration and personal touch:

I found this paper butterfly stamp at Hobby Lobby, and got it for 40% off!

I put it into the corner of the cone top, making sure both sides had room on each side.

I pressed hard to imprint the butterfly, and this is the result :-)
I pushed out each butterfly, creating two butterflies in one: One cutout in the shape of one for the cones, and as you can see by the background, a bunch of little butterflies laying around.

End resulting cones: I like that they aren't perfect, but they will do the trick.

I put all of the extra cut out butterflies in a plastic bag to use as confetti for the table decor.

Mr. Bojangles was worn out after helping me to rip up newspaper
(he chewed on a few pieces himself).
